Do you have what it takes to hold your relationship together?
The first thing that everyone needs to know when it comes to long distance relationship advice is that it's definitely possible! There are many, many couples who have either started out as an LDR or ended up in one after a job transfer or other move and who made it work. These are not just isolated examples. With the right attitude, commitment and advice, you can find happiness in your long distance relationship. My first piece of long distance relationship advice is this: stay connected! Pick a time each day when you won't be busy or distracted with other things to pick up the phone and call your partner. Mornings are often a good time for this. Talking over your day and about what's going on in your life is a great way to stay involved with each other's lives. Mixing in emails, letters or care packages is another way to send a reminder to your partner that you're thinking about them even though you're far away. Another key to surviving an LDR is to visit each other when possible. This can be difficult, or even impossible if your partner is overseas or finances are a major issue, but even partners who are closer together sometimes let their busy schedules get in the way of this all important time together. Seeing each other in person is important in maintaining your relationship and reminding you why you're together in the first place. Try to alternate who visits who, and make sure you really spend that time alone together, instead of in large groups of friends. Another important piece of long distance relationship advice is to be realistic about your expectations. If trust has been a major issue in your relationship, then an LDR may prove difficult. Even in the strongest relationships you should expect there to be lonely or difficult times to deal with. One way to help you through is to set a definite time limit. Knowing that in 6 months or a year that you will be living in the same city again can really help. Even if you follow all of this long distance relationship advice, there may be some rough patches or times of doubt. It's important to remember to trust your own judgement and to be honest with your partner about what you're feeling. Instead of looking for solutions online, try and solve your problem actively. After all, no long distance relationship advice is perfect for every couple or every situation. |
